FLETCHER, N.C. (WLOS) — The “Letters to Santa” Santa Mailbox on South River Road in Fletcher is where News 13 first met Blair and Donnie Young almost one year ago.
“We have been trying to start a family,” they said.
The couple struggled with infertility issues for years, but their love for children — and getting decked out for the Christmas holiday — made their idea come naturally.
“I dropped my letter off into the Santa mailbox, and when I did that, it made me happy,” said one little boy after dropping his letter into the bright red mailbox at the edge of the Youngs’ lawn.
That idea was to help Santa, letting him locate his custom-made mailbox on their front lawn, to collect letters from neighborhood kids and get them delivered up to the North Pole in time.
Donnie said Jolly Old Saint Nick made one specific request for 2020 in order to stay ahead of the ever-present pandemic.
“He asked if he could his drop his mailbox off a little early and get a jump start on spreading some Christmas cheer, and I told him, ‘Sure,'” Donnie said. “He’s already picked up 20 letters.”
That’s 20 letters so far, along with one very special delivery.
The Youngs have a baby on the way.
“I can tell you he — it’s going to be a little boy — is expected mid-to-late April,” Blair said, with a big smile.
Yes, after five years of trying to conceive, the wish of a lifetime is finally coming true for this family.
“I hope our story can give other people hope because, I mean, this year we need it,” Donnie said.
For the Youngs, everything is about an undying love for the Christmas season; so when it came time to reveal the baby’s gender, you can forget the pink and blue.
“It was a Christmas-themed gender reveal,” Blair said, “where red was a girl, and green was a boy.”
